Baby Food What You Need To Know | Newborn Baby Nutrition
New parents are subjected to all kinds of contradictory advice about infant nutrition. But; there is no right guideline to follow; its very confusing for these newbie parents when it comes to knowing what is the right baby food.
Your pediatric will be helping you initially; however you want to be sure that you are providing your infant a healthiest start. Infancy; the first year of life is a prime time for growth and changes throughout the body. What we eat as infants strongly affects our long-term body weight, health, metabolic programming, immune system, and overall aging.
Infant food nutrition means making sure your baby is getting enough nutrients during his first year. Nutrients are calories, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. Making sure your infant has nutrition packed baby food to protect against disease. It also helps them healthy as they grow older. Every infant is different. Your baby may need more or less of the items in each food group and may also need a infant nutrition special diet.
What Breastfeeding Moms Needs To Take Care ?
What you as a pregnant or nursing mother eat, your baby eats.
- Limit your alcohol, caffeine, etc.
- You should limit your toxin exposure. Eat organic when possible; scrub your fresh veggies/fruits; and avoid most seafood.
Of course, breast milk will be especially healthy if mom eats nutritiously while she’s pregnant and breastfeeding Breast milk will provide all of the nutrients the infant needs for the first six months of life. However, some babies may need a bit of supplementation at times.
Introducing Solid Baby Food Nutrition
Until about 4-6 months old, infants can’t digest most foods.
Infants are ready for solid foods once they have doubled their birth weight, providing they can hold their heads up, sit in a high chair, open their mouths when food is presented, and swallow. This usually occurs around 6 months old.
At first, offer solid baby food in addition to breast milk, not as a replacement for it. The infant’s first “solid” foods should also be liquid-like.
Don’t rush it is likely that your baby will take time in adjusting the taste and figuring out which he/she likes the most. Try new infant food variety every 3-4 days which gives you the time to determine how your baby is responding towards it. Don’t worry; if baby’s eating various other foods, nutrient intake should be adequate.
P.S.: Pay attention; if you notice any type of negative reaction such as allergies, vomiting etc. Stop giving that food immediately.
Solid Baby Food Timeline To Follow 6 To 12 Months
Step 1 – Start With Rice Cereal
Rice cereal with breast milk or formula is a common first food. It’s generally well-tolerated with low potential for allergy.
However, rice cereal is rooted in tradition rather than science. There’s no strong evidence that this is a better option than other single-grain cereals. Try it and see how it goes.
Step 2 – Veggies
Vegetables are full of nutrients and not as sweet as fruits. Puréed vegetables such as sweet potatoes, beets, squashes, or carrots are easy to cook and mash.
Step 3 – Fruits
Introduce fruit after vegetables. If fruit is the first food, baby might expect every food to taste sweet; an important factor considering that food tastes formed early in life can persist.
Also, babies don’t yet have the ability to digest fructose effectively. So, unless you want explosive diarrhea, keep fruit intake moderate and avoid high-fiber fruits like prunes for a while.
You can try things like:
- mashed banana with breast milk
- cooked and puréed fruit
Step 4 – High Protein Food
This includes well-cooked and mashed beans/lentils/green peas, and finely chopped meats. You could even add a little undenatured, unflavored whey protein to pureed foods, formula, etc.
Adding The Touch Of Sweetness But Avoid Giving Processed Sugar
Human babies are born with an innate preference for sweetness, which in nature signifies valuable energy-rich foods. Blend up a little bit of sweet potato or fruit into otherwise less-sweet foods such as bitter vegetables.
Again, remember that what your baby starts with will affect their adult food preferences. So avoid processed sugar especially; hidden in commercial baby foods along with fruit purées and juices as much as possible.
And avoid honey for the first year or so, as it can contain bacteria that infants can’t yet deal with.
Baby Food To Avoid
- Do not give your baby honey before 1 year of age. Honey may contain bacteria that can cause botulism in babies.
- Avoid cow’s milk before age 1, since it does not have all of the nutrients that babies need and babies cannot digest it
- Unpasteurized drinks or foods (such as juices, milks, yogurt, or cheeses) may put your child at some health allergies.
- Certain foods that can cause choking, such as hard candy, popcorn, whole nuts, and grapes unless they are cut into small pieces. Don’t give your child these foods before age 3 because it contains a lot of sugar, babies should not drink juice before age 1
Learning hunger cues is important for both parents and babies. And parents, why not re-learn your own natural hunger cues along with discovering your infant’s?
Remember that infants will be highly self-regulated. They’ll want to eat when they’re hungry, and stop when they’re full.
For a baby, breast milk is best. It has all the necessary vitamins and minerals. Infant formulas are available for babies whose mothers are not able to or decide not to breastfeed.
Infants are usually ready to eat solid foods at about 6 months of age. Check with your health care provider for the best time for your baby to start. If you introduce one new food at a time, you will be able to identify any foods that cause allergies in your baby. Allergic reactions include a a rash, diarrhea, or vomiting.
