Our brains are 60% fat, of which 20% should be Omega 3 fatty acids. During pregnancy and infancy, insufficient intake of DHA has shown great impact on the development of babies’ brains.

Your child’s blood levels of long-chain Omega-3 DHA can significantly predict how well he or she is able to concentrate and learn.

Omega-3 regulates the brain’s neurotransmitters and enhances the life of a neuron. Because the brain does not produce omega-3s on our own, humans must seek them out through diets or supplements.

Regular consumption of these foods is necessary to ensure that your body gets the right amount of omega-3 fats. Therefore; lack of these fats in the body can result in a poor immune system, skin health, and vulnerability to a variety of health problems.

Hence Omega-3s are essential for growing kids to improve their cognitive and behavioral functioning.

Types Of Omega 3

The types of omega-3 fats are: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). These elements are primarily found in chicken and beef.

Grass-fed animals tend to have a higher amount and produce milk as well as in  eggs there is higher amount to be found in omega-3 fats.

Benefits In Kids Of Taking Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s are important for children’s health right from the start – actually, before they’re even born. Here’s some of the evidence.

Cognitive development

Some studies show that infants fed formulas enriched with the omega-3 fatty acid DHA show improvements in hand-eye coordination, attention span, social skills, and intelligence test scores.

Studies have shown that children born to mothers who took supplements of omega-3s during pregnancy and the during the first months of breastfeeding scored higher on cognitive tests at 4 years of age compared to children whose mothers did not take supplements.

Cognitive development

Omega-3s support a child’s cognitive development. Children who were fed foods rich in or fortified with Omega-3s showed better hand-eye coordination, social skills.

Improves children’s sleep

The study suggested omega-3 supplementation could have a beneficial effect on sleep. Lower blood levels of DHA, and that DHA supplementation led to lesser sleep. However; this problem can be improved by providing your kid with Omega-3 diet as well as supplements.

Improves learning and behaviour in development coordination disorder

The results showed that the kids who had significant amount of Omega-3 intake had witnessed improvement in reading, spelling and behaviour.

Better vision

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for better vision or eye function.

Reduces allergies in kids

Eating oily fish or fish oil supplementation in pregnancy may be a strategy to prevent infant and childhood allergic disease. Whilst a study in infants from birth to 6 months found that omega-3s were able to modify markers of immunity and potentially protective against allergies.

All of this indicates that consumption of omega-3 during pregnancy by the mothers or intake of omega-3 in infancy is able to help reduce the incidence of allergic diseases, including asthma.

Cures depression

Kids with bipolar disorder who took omega-3 supplements alongside prescription medication had fewer mood swings therefore lesser chance of relapsing. When compared to those who did not take the supplements.

Memory enhancer

Omega-3 is associated with your kid’s memory functioning.  Considering that the fatty acids are most concentrated in the brain region.
