7 Ways To Raise A Confident Child | Boost Self-esteem | Competent Child

I want to raise a confident child ! Perhaps, this is every parent’s dream.  It is never too late to build your self-esteem, and increase your ability to be a great role model for your children.

Children with low self-esteem tend to be very critical of themselves, and they are hesitant to face challenges.  Because they fear about their own negative self-view, show poor frustration tolerance, and do not feel worthy of love. Furthermore, having a negative self-esteem is correlated with many mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance use.

Why Self-Confident/ Self-esteem Matters

Kids who feel good about themselves have the confidence to try new things. They are more likely to try their best. They feel proud of what they can do. Self-esteem helps kids cope with mistakes. It helps kids try again, even if they fail at first. As a result, self-esteem helps kids do better at school, at home, and with friends.

Kids with low self-esteem feel unsure of themselves. If they think others won’t accept them, they may not join in. They may let others treat them poorly. They may have a hard time standing up for themselves. They may give up easily, or not try at all. Kids with low self-esteem find it hard to cope when they make a mistake, lose, or fail. As a result, they may not do as well as they could.

Building Self-esteem In Kids

Self-esteem is about liking yourself and who you are. This doesn’t mean being overconfident – just believing in yourself and knowing what you do well.

For kids, self-esteem comes from:

  • knowing that they’re loved and that they belong to a family and a community that values them
spending quality time with their families
  • being encouraged to try new things, finding things they’re good at and being praised for things that are important to them.

One of the major goals of parents when it is about how to raise a confident child is to ensure that their kids develop and fosters a healthy self-esteem to carry with them through life.

Here are 7 important tips which helps you raise a confident child.

Let Your Child Know “Nobody Is Perfect”

It’s natural to want to protect your child from failure, but trial and error is how kids learn, and falling short on a goal helps kids find out that it’s not fatal. It can also spur kids to greater effort, which will serve them well as adults.

Help kids see that everyone makes mistakes and the important thing is to learn from them, not dwell on them. Confident people don’t let fear of failure get in their way—not because they’re sure they won’t ever fail, but because they know how to take setbacks in stride.

The way you react to your child’s mistakes and disappointments colors the way he/she will react.

1.Do Not Over Praise Your Child

Self-esteem comes from feeling loved and secure, and from developing competence, Taylor says, and although parents often shower their kids with the first two ingredients, competence—becoming good at things—takes time and effort.
In fact, by over-praising kids, we’re doing more harm than good. We’re lowering the bar for them.

If you keep telling your child she is already doing a fantastic job, you’re saying she no longer needs to push herself. But confidence comes from doing, from trying and failing and trying again

2.Let Your Kid Make His/Her Own Choices

When kids make their own age-appropriate choices, they feel more powerful. Let your kids decide on their own whether to wear a coat, which dress she wants to wear, which book they want to read and so on.

Once they knew the difference between warm and cold, it was up to them. They should have control over their bodies and take responsibility for their choices.

3.Encourage  Your Kids To Try New Things

Instead of focusing all their energy on what they already excel at, it’s good for kids to diversify. Obtaining new skills makes kids feel capable and confident that they can tackle whatever comes their way.

4.When Teaching Kids How To- Show & Help Them At First

If you want to raise a confident child then let them do what they can, even if they make mistakes. Be sure your child gets a chance to learn, try, and feel proud. Don’t make new challenges too easy or too hard.

5. Stress The Importance Of Efforts & Completion Rather Than Performance

Research demonstrates that when it comes to practice on how to raise a confident child; it is more effective to reward actual effort and completion of a task, rather than praising children for their performance compared to others.

You want to ensure that your children understand that they are valued because of who they are, not how they perform and measure up to other children.

6. Don’t Jump in to Rescue When Kids Experience Failure & Challenges

This is a hard one, because letting your child get discouraged, make mistakes, struggle or get hurt, hurts you too.

As a parent, it goes against our natural instincts to swoop in and make things right. Unless your child is physically hurt, put your hands in your pocket, or bite your tongue, and hold back from the urge to jump into action.

When we jump to their rescue, we aren’t doing them any favors by trying to fix and make things right. Failure is a necessary, and sometimes painful part of life whether your a child or an adult.

Kids need to learn to overcome discouragement, struggles, and obstacles on their own in order to develop confidence and positive self esteem. What they learn when they fail and how they respond, will ultimately build resilience, perseverance, and boost confidence in knowing that they can overcome it.

The best part? When your kids succeed, even in the face of failure, the confidence they gain from the experience will be magical.

7. Let Your Child Know That Your Love Is Unconditional

Make sure your children know and experience your love for them no matter what happens, and make it clear that your love for them has no limitations. This is a powerful tip when it you are practicing on how to raise a confident child.

If you are concerned that your child is struggling with their self-esteem, consider having them see a psychotherapist to help build their repertoire of skills for dealing with the challenges they face, and foster positive self-beliefs that will increase their self-esteem.

Wrapping Up

Self-esteem is feeling good about yourself. Good self-esteem helps children try new things, take healthy risks and solve problems. It gives them a solid foundation for their learning and development and that is how you raise a confident child
