Throw in the winter break with a less structured schedule, and healthy habits are easily sidelined. Good holiday eating habits are hard to keep up during the holiday season for us as adults, but imagine what a challenge it is for kids hence; healthy holiday eating tips for your kids to enjoy this festive season being carefree.

The holiday season is here and for most of us that means Diwali dinners, Christmas parties, New Year’s celebrations which means food, food, and more food. Not to mention that with more to pack into our already busy schedules, who has time for exercise?

Keeping up with healthy habits has benefits for your whole body like helping to avoid holiday weight gain, helping to fend off holiday stress and fatigue, and helping to keep your immune system strong. Many people give up on healthy habits during the holidays but with these tips you can teach your children about healthy holiday eating and how to stay healthy during this busy time of year.

Encourage your kids to eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, & beans; and, don’t forget the herbs and spices for immune boosting benefits.

1.Use Fruits As Desserts

Take advantage of the delicious variety of available citrus in season. Serve peeled and segmented pink grapefruit with dinner, loose pomegranate seeds, or heated frozen fruit. Frozen cherries or fresh apples are delicious warmed on the stovetop or in the microwave served with cinnamon.

2.Talk About Mindful Eating & Trade-offs

Don’t cut sweet treats out entirely, but do limit them. Talk about saving sweets for special times during the holidays, and enlist your kids to keep track what they have eaten to help them be mindful. Steer them to make decisions like having a small piece of dessert now, and sharing the rest or saving it for another day.
